A joyful African American family celebrating Christmas in a cozy living room with stockings and a Christmas tree.

I love the holiday season

There’s something magical about the holiday season that wraps you in a warm, nostalgic hug—and no, it’s not just the 45 blankets I’m buried under while sipping peppermint hot chocolate. (Okay, maybe that helps.) The holidays have this sneaky way of turning even the grumpiest among us into sugar cookie-eating, Hallmark-movie-watching optimists. And, I’ll admit it, I’m all in.

Let’s Talk Decorations
First, can we all agree there’s no such thing as “too many lights”? Some people decorate their trees. I decorate my entire personality. My house is visible from space—and if you live on my street, I apologize for the glow keeping you up at night. But seriously, is it even Christmas if your electricity bill doesn’t double? Pro tip: When in doubt, add more tinsel.

The Foodie Dream
The holiday season is the only time of year where eating an entire tray of cookies before lunch isn’t just acceptable—it’s encouraged. Gingerbread, eggnog, pie… I don’t even care what flavor it is; if it looks festive, I’m eating it. Let’s also not forget those family recipes that somehow taste better when you’re surrounded by people you love—and by love, I mean tolerate for three to five hours.

Family Gatherings: A Comedy Special
Speaking of family, the holidays wouldn’t be the same without that one relative who still asks, “So when are you going to settle down?” at every gathering. Thanks, Aunt Carol, but I’m focusing on my career and also trying to figure out why the turkey smells like burnt dreams. On the bright side, these moments make for great stories… and occasional therapy topics.

Holiday Shopping: A Sport
Holiday shopping is my annual reminder that I don’t do cardio. Nothing says “season of giving” like sprinting across a crowded mall to snag the last discounted air fryer. Online shopping is supposed to make life easier, but somehow, I end up in a virtual queue behind 3,000 people also trying to buy socks. (Who knew socks were that popular?) But when the perfect gift arrives, there’s nothing better than seeing someone’s face light up.

The True Spirit of the Holidays
Amid the chaos, the endless Mariah Carey songs, and the 12-hour cookie comas, the holiday season always brings me back to what really matters: connection. It’s the little moments—writing heartfelt cards, sipping cocoa while watching snow fall, or laughing over a board game—that stick with you long after the last strand of lights has been packed away.

So yes, I love the holiday season. I love the chaos, the cheer, and the overwhelming sense that, for a few weeks, the world is a little brighter, warmer, and kinder. Here’s to embracing the magic, the mayhem, and, let’s be honest, the extra servings of pie. Cheers! 🥂
